assistant

General purpose

Under general supervision, provide instruction to individual or small groups of students in assigned subject areas to enhance classroom instruction; observe, monitor and record student behavior and performance; assist teachers in maintaining student academic records and attendance records; and perform related duties as assigned.

Teaching assistants are responsible for providing instruction and guidance to individual and small groups of students to improve classroom instruction and enhance remedial skills. Jobs assigned to teaching assistants require knowledge of subject areas applicable to the assignment area and the ability to instruct others in an effective manner.

Basic duties and responsibilities

The responsibilities listed below are only intended to illustrate the different types of work that can be performed. Omission of a specific job description does not exclude them from the position if the job is similar, related or logical to such. These responsibilities will usually have an assigned schedule.

  1. Work with individual and small groups of children and tutor them in assigned subject areas to reinforce classroom instruction, advance remedial skill areas, and assist students with class and homework; supervise students as they complete drills, exercises and assignments; assisted and supervised students' work in learning centers in the classroom.
  1. Observe, monitor and record student performance and behaviour; assess student learning needs based on student achievement in individual or group lessons; meet with teachers to discuss progress and determine course needs; prepare progress reports and schedule parent-teacher conferences as needed.
  1. Can read and write with students on a group or individual basis, using structured lesson plans and phonics inventory strategies to improve students' literacy skills and abilities; can conduct guided reading and use teaching materials to assist in the learning process; monitor the performance of student tasks.
  1. Facilitates and administers testing and grading of exams, lectures and homework; distributes and collects assignments and tests; corrects and records grades; publishes students' works; can assist and monitor CELDT, CAT, Star, SABE, Woodcok-Munoz and SAT 9 tests, For student placement purposes; they can be scored and entered into the information system for students of the Woodcock-Munoz test.
  1. May coordinate and administer various reading programs such as Reading Proficiency, Remedial Reading, Nature Reading, EIP, STARS, Accelerated Reading, and Universal Success; maintain records of student progress; assessments and evaluations before and after completion; prepare and maintain instructional materials, supplies and equipment inventory.
  1. Management of targeted lesson plans; printing and evaluating the Target Teach scanner; monitoring student testing on computers; generation and distribution of Target Teach results and reports to teachers and administrators; entering data into ratings and marks; attending regular planning meetings.
  1. Prepares, organizes and maintains student files; keeps records of attendance, daily activities and exercises; moves students in and out of the classroom.
  1. Assists the teaching staff in the preparation of lesson plans and teaching in the classroom; may be asked to teach lessons or provide instruction in specific subject areas as needed; can use specialized mathematical equipment for teaching; teach students how to use calculators.
  1. With teacher guidance and direction, prepares lessons, teaching materials, resource packs and homework; reviews, checks and corrects tasks.

Under the guidance and guidelines of the teacher, prepare teaching materials and equipment for use in the classroom; handle teaching equipment; set up and prepare classroom bulletin boards, work areas, exhibits and displays; inspect student supplies and materials; maintain books, audiovisuals, and other inventory of classroom materials.

11. Supervise student activity and assist in observing and controlling student behavior; assist in student discipline and conflict resolution; cover classrooms as needed; supervise students during meal breaks and yard time; monitor students as needed; accompany classes on field trips to help supervise students.

12. Perform general editorial duties to support the classroom; copy and archive student files and records; respond to classroom and teacher calls; type letters and memos; send faxes; create new files and arrange records alphabetically; plasticize materials; perform tasks and deliver for a teacher, teacher, professor.

13. Coordinate the organization of meetings; provide translation for parents and teachers during meetings, conferences and interviews; provide refreshments.

14. Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly learning environment to ensure student health and safety, assist in cleaning classrooms and classroom supplies and equipment.

  1. If necessary, attend conferences, professional training, seminars and workshops.
  1. Assist with school book fairs as needed.
  1. Performs general clerical duties in support of the program.
  1. Plans and conducts daily workshops for parents on basic English language use and curriculum objectives to facilitate a more productive learning environment at home; provides and teaches parents the basic use of the English language; researches and organizes seminars and prepares course materials.
  1. Enroll and place students in extended learning courses.
  1. Help deliver books and materials to classrooms at the beginning of the school year.
  1. Organizes, maintains and manages school book corners; maintains cleanliness; maintains inventory.
  1. Plans and coordinates school programs of fine and performing arts; prepares and distributes materials for the Master of Arts program in classrooms; publishes and maintains the schedule of hours for the Master of Arts; acts as liaison between faculty and Master of Arts staff; evaluates and selects to promote fine art Search and distribute accordingly; supervise auditions and direct student performances.
