Tips and ideas for a more modern look for your cream cabinets
When updating a kitchen or bathroom with cream cabinets, it's not just about finding the best paint colors (you'll find links to them in this blog post); it's about understanding why it's best.
That's why I've compiled a collection of the most common questions I get asked in the comments section, instagram, in mineYOUTUBE KANAL.
So, without further ado, let's get this cream-inspired color party started!
Can I paint my walls white or off-white with cream cabinets or trim?
Hardly not. You can stop looking, you can stop suffering - that magic color doesn't exist (insert wine here). Whether you're watching or notWarm whiteorreal white people; White did NOT work,Without exception(I'm sorry).
Why?
- Pairing cream cabinets (or trim) with white will make your cabinets popmore yellowFor comparisson. If you don't mind, put the boots on, but it's usually not the way you want it to look.
- If you pair cream cabinets with an off-white that's the same color as your cabinets, you risk some seriously clashing hues—the two colors will fight.Slot of the same color.
Look at the next photo. You'll see a range of warm off-white neutrals paired with very creamy cabinets. Notice how the cabinets look richer and more yellow compared to this warm off white...
Sherwin Williamsbeautiful white,holy white,white duck
Do not worry; thisThe above samples are not intended for "wall color matching"– They were for a different project, I appreciate them sending this blog post as a great example of what doesn't work!
Now let's try pairing cream cabinets with a warm white or two...
The first example is shown by Sherwin-Williamsantique whitecabinet with a Benjamin Moore patterncloud white, warm white color...
Although it never hurts to try, just be aware that the cabinets will look more yellow compared to warm white - examples like this count! It's one thing to have cream walls and white trim; it's quite another to change things. For this client, we tried using warm white tones, but it was hard to say no.
This is Sherwin Williamscreamy, it's a warm gray and white on vintage white…
Look at how those golden yellow cabinets lookby comparison! I mean, sometimes you just have to try to know, but once you try and it doesn't work, it's time to move on (which is what I tell Tim every Friday night).
Remember, just because you don't want to hear it doesn't mean it's not true (say with love, blink blink).
Exceptions
1. If you're one of the lucky few with mid-height cream cabinets in the off-white range (LRV of 80/81), you can get as close to soft white on the walls as you want to replicate the color of your wall cabinet. For example, Sherwin-WilliamscreamyOn a white/off-white border. When a color like cream has such a high LRV, it is more likely to behave likesoft, warm whiteinstead of off-white, making it a great choice for walls and cabinets (and trim).
2. If you have darker/heavier/more yellow cream cabinets or decorate and insist on off-white walls...
I recommend that you paint the walls and cabinets the same color; there is simply no other option in off-white.
Yes, keep it simple and flawless;Let the shine changedo the work for you. Even if the color is more yellow than you want, you can't always get what you want if you have cream cabinets. If there's a better option - I'll let you know, I promise. You can try lightening the cabinet color by 25% for a slightly lighter look. Because of this, your cabinets will not look less yellow, if I had stayed with the same color.
How do I make my cream or liner cabinets look less yellow?
When it comes to cream cabinets, it's not about making them look less yellow—they're the color of yellow. If that is your concern,it's more about it does not make them more yellow.
It's hard to turn cream into something it's not - and it's not white. Of course, if your cream has a high LRV (which we'll get to a little later), you have a better chance of achieving a soft look. But in addition, you also have a cream yellow border.
1. Don't use an off-white that doesn't quite match your cabinets
An off white or lighter paint color that is the same color or lighter than the cream cabinets will make your cabinets or trim look more yellow...
2. Avoid cold colors
Painting the walls a cool color (i.e. gray or teal) will make your cream cabinets or trim look more yellow in comparison…
Sherwin Williamscomfortable gray– nice combination, but the yellow definitely shines!
Also refers togray and dark brown.Although these are warm lacquer colors, they are "cooler" than the cream color.
3. Paint your walls the same cream color as your cabinets or paneling
This is tricky because the flow into the next room with white trim can be tricky, but sometimes you can't fit everything in one color. Generally speaking, when it comes to colors and designs, you have toFirst, do what fits the roomThen start practicing from there.
Sometimes gentle and simple are best - Benjamin Moorenavajo white
In the following example, my client has Sherwin Williams antique white cabinets...with glaze. Glazes make it very demanding because it adjusts the original color and intensity.
Their original goal was to find a warm white color, but that didn't work out with these cabinets. Ruling out other possible options (ie beige), we settled on Antique White, which is 25% lighter in color, which is about as white as we could get! Although the match was not 100% and varied from one side of the wall to the other, they got the glossier look they wanted!
Sometimes when the ideal world doesn't exist (and the "ideal world" is usually white cabinets), it's all about finding the next best thing.
The next kitchen has very creamy yellow cabinets, and the best solution is cream-colored walls. Having said that, while cream cabinets are often the best choice for certain granite countertops, if we were starting from scratch, we would opt for a cream with less yellowing…
4. Stick to warm, muted neutral tones
Light to medium dark neutrals are the best choice to tone down the look of a cream cabinet. but rememberCream cabinet is cream cabinet, and lackPaint them with a more flexible white color, they are what they are!
the last point is not mineelectronic designThis is usually what clients want to hear, but it works.
If I have cream cabinets or trim, can I paint the walls gray or gray?
That! But let's be honest, it's never that simple...
Warm colors rarely like cool colors of the same color or lighter than them.
I want you to write it down in the annals of your soul (I already know there are two "n's" in the annals, watch out for that). While things are changing as warm colors get darker, if you're somewhere in the white to medium range, proceed with caution.
Warm colors can only tolerate colors that are cooler than them, but darker than them.
I said yes20+ LRV-ovadot or more (may vary depending on how yellow your cream is). By the way, I don't just mean cool colors; I only think of colors'not so warm'Colors that match them. If you look at the WARMER option for walls, sometimes you guess15 light rail vehiclesspread.
Once you remember this amazing trick, your painting life will be so... much more... easier (you'll learn about LRV soon).
This restaurant features Sherwin Williamscreamyon the decoration. Since the cream is almost white in color, it looks wickedly gorgeousChelsea nicewall. It also helps that Chelsea Gray is noticeably darker than Creamy, so they're nowhere near the competition in depth...
As shown in the next space, walls toocoolexceptLightCreamy warm tones of decorations and cabinets...
Even with a low LRV, this cool-toned paint color does not blend well with the surrounding finishes. The above is a great example of someone wanting to paint their walls a certain color, whether it makes sense or not.
Choose colors for the home you own, not the home you wish you had.
Let's look at a cream cabinet (similar to Sherwin Williamsantique white) with Sherwin Williams Worldly Gray and Popular Gray. These two colors are 15 and 11 LRV points below Antique White, respectively.
These are not my favorite options, but my clients want to try it, sometimes you just don't know until you try!
notice howmundane gray(left) thanpop siva(exactly). But there is no screaming fame either. While Worldly Gray is "better", hestill very doubtfulIn comparison, the wardrobes look very warm. I'm always happy to accommodate clients when they want to try something like this, because sometimes they have to see for themselves why it doesn't work.
In the next photo, my client has a cream rim (color unknown). Luckily, it's not a super dark or super yellow cream, which means we have more flexibility. Even then we had to black outside comb ashThe 25% increase is just to increase the LRV between the two colors and have some kind of play between them...
What is LRV and why do I need it?
If you've been drinking my Koolaid with alcohol for a while, you'll knowHow important is LRVin the color selection process. Here's the bottom line...
Each paint color has an LRV number on a scale of 0-100.
0 is pure black and 100 is pure white.
The closer a color's LRV is to 0, the closer it is to black.
The closer a color's LRV is to 100, the closer it is to white.

How does knowing the LRV of my paint color help me choose?
To find the right paint color for your cream cabinets or trim, you need to start with a color that is about 20 LRV points lower than your cream color (I said 15 points earlier, but that was overkill). That's why it's very important to be sure what kind of cream you're dealing with (or as close as possible).
The closer two colors are in depth, the more competitive they are. You need approx.20+ LRV-ovaThe point between the cream cabinet/dish and the color of the walls.
What wall colors go with cream or off-white cabinets (or trim)?
I swear when I read on the internet, it's like some consultant is pulling color out of their... out of thin air. "Blue, dark brown, white, gray," read one site. Seriously, thanks - I'll pass on almost all of them.
